Similar Scenes:Two Techniques

Today's share is a something a little different than what I've ever shared before.  As I mentioned in my last post, I featured two techniques at my card class this month; one being Direct to Paper and the other being Masking & Sponging.  I wanted to be able to showcase how although each technique is very different from the other you can achieve similar results using either one - hence the similar landscapes.  Both use the exact same colors, layouts, papers, and ribbon.  Here's a quick overview of each card individually...

Supplies:

Stamp sets: Serene Silhouettes
Cardstock: Whisper White, Certainly Celery, Bermuda Bay
Ink: Soft Sky, Bermuda Bay, Island Indigo, Old Olive, Always Artichoke, Basic Black
Accessories: Chevron embossing folder, white gel pen, Natural Trim ribbon, Tombow liquid adhesive

If you've never heard of the Direct to Paper technique its a simple method of using the edges of the ink pad to apply the ink to paper.  It gives a very artistic and impressionistic look to your design and often doesn't look complete until you add a feature stamp or two at the end of the process.  It's a technique that takes a little practice to figure out how to hold the ink pads for the best results, but can be addictive simply because you can create a lot with little materials in little time!

Begin by smearing Soft Sky along the upper 1/3 of Whisper White cardstock, adding a small amount of Island Indigo along the upper edge of the skyline.  Next, smear Bermuda Bay ink using an angle motion to create the mountains; try to add varying heights for interest.  Using Soft Sky again, fill in the remaining white space - roughly the bottom 2/3 of the cardstock.  Using Old Olive then Always Artichoke smear ink between the mountains and water and along the bottom edge to create the illusion of trees and grasses around the water.  Add a few streaks of Island Indigo in the water area for definition.  Finish by stamping the flowers from the Serene Silhouettes set in Basic Black and highlight a few of the flowers with a white gel pen.

Masking is the process of covering a portion of the paper and then apply ink above, below, or around then removing - leaving a portion of the paper inked and the other portion left as white space.  There are so many possibilities with this technique; a punched circle masked for a sun, a torn post it note for mountains and grass lines, or a simple straight line border for interest on a card front.

Begin by tearing a post it note - no special way, just random!  Using the negative portion of the mask (ie: the portion that will cover the sky area) position it roughly 1/3 of the way down the Whisper White cardstock.  Load a sponge with Bermuda Bay ink and begin sponging beneath the mask.  Work darker at the top and fade lighter towards the bottom.  Remove the mask, flip it over, re-position it to the right and down from the first mountain and repeat the process.  Remove the mask.  Sponge Soft Sky above the mountains to create the sky; darker on the edges of the cardstock, fading the color inwards.  Add a small amount of Island Indigo on the edges for depth.

Sponge Soft Sky below the mountains for the water.  Sponge Old Olive then Always Artichoke around the edges of the water followed by a small amount of Island Indigo for depth in the water.  Finish by stamping the flowers from the Serene Silhouettes set in Basic Black and highlight a few of the flowers with a white gel pen.

Hope this comparison has given you a new insight and some perhaps some inspiration into how techniques, although completely different, can be used to achieve similar results.
